Catching up!

WRAPPING UP MY CLASSES AT THE MUSEUM

"Gypsy" was my creation to use for an introduction to acrylic portraiture for 5-week course at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.  Other than helping my friend Christine with her "Cork & Canvas" classes at the Museum over the past year, this was my second series of classes on the subject.  I will teach this again during the Winter session at the Museum.  The class was great, filled with enthusiastic painters--beginning and intermediate--who did a fantastic job on the Gypsy, and then on the portrait of their choice.  I start them off with profiles, as that is the easiest to do, no matching symmetry with eyes, elements and shape of face, etc.

PAINT PARTY AT THE BLUE LION BAR

 ~ PAINT - SIP - LAUGH - REPEAT ~

Monday, November 2nd, 6:30-9:00 p.m. will be my first Art Party at the Blue Lion Wine Bar, 13401 US Hwy 1 in Sebastian in the Riverview Shopping Center - 772-589-4445.  The above painting will be the subject.  Looks complicated but it really will be fairly easy, even for those who have never painted before.  I was invited to take this on by the new owner, during the opening reception of an artist friend there.  It will be fun, sipping wine and doing my favorite thing to do (other than playing with my granddaughter) teaching people how to paint.  Reservations are needed (though walk-ins will be accepted if there is room).  Price, which includes all supplies: $35.

GYPSY "WIPE OUT"

"Gypsy II" Oil by Judy Burgarella

This handsome man started out as a demonstration at the Sebastian River Art Club for my class on Thursdays.  Finished it up later at home, then entered it into the Vero Beach Art Club's "Member's Invitational," which is installed every year in the classroom wing gallery of the Vero Beach Museum of Art.  I was glad my students got to see it before the end of my Fall classes.

FANTASTIC FIND!

While strolling through the first St. Sebastian Flea Market of the season on October 3rd, I came upon this wonderful gem of an oil painting.  Except it didn't look like this.  The face caught my eye, leaning in front of a bunch of junky trinkets, but the size of it was so big, and falling out of its frame.  The face was superb, however the body--seated with folded hands--was poorly rendered.  So I walked on by, but it haunted me as I rummaged through the sale.  And then I saw this fabulous frame.  Solidly carved with pure wood embellishments and beautiful aged gilding.  The four+ big nail holes through the front of the frame didn't scare me--they're easy to fix.  It's the scrollwork and it was in excellent condition.  Obviously old.  Hm-m-m-m, I wondered how it would look framing that beautiful face?  Nah!  So I walked on.  On my way out I walked by that darned face again and just couldn't resist it.  They wanted $15 for that fantastic painting, and I was almost embarrassed to offer them $10--but they took it!  With frame and all it measured 41" high by 29" wide--Huge!  So off I went to carry it to the car.  Then back I went to get that frame.  Again, they wanted $15 (cheap!) but I offered $10, and Bingo!  When I got back to the car and positioned it on her face it was magic.  They were made for each other as you can see.  The signature was unrecognizable so the pain of cutting it down was not as great as I thought.  They both are obviously very old and I feel honored to have them in my possession.  I have filled in the holes and just have to match the gilding.  Then up on my high shelf in the family room it will go, carefully arranged near baskets, faux plants and jugs.

Collecting art, no matter where you buy it or how much you pay for it, is thrilling and I never tire of looking at these faces every day, with the occasional wonderment of who they were and how they came to have their image captured in oil.  They are the ghosts that live in my house, but good ones.

THE FAMOUS A. E. (BEANY) BACKUS

Finished Painting, A.E. (Beany) Backus, Oil, 16"x20"

Beginnings of A.E. Backus portrait, with reference photo

Progression of Beany Backus painting
Entered the A. E. Backus Gallery's show, "The Best of the Best," where my work has won awards in the past.  It's a good show I'm always proud to be in.  I had a bright idea though to paint the person the gallery is named after: Beany Backus.  What a job I had finding any kind of images of him.  Not many, and I couldn't recall any paintings of the Master himself in the gallery.  So above are pics of the progression of my free-hand painting, and the final subject.  Had a wonderful time painting this man whose work I have admired for years.  Backus Museum is at 500 N Indian River Drive in Ft. Pierce 772-465-0630, www.backusmuseum.com.  The show closes November 13th.

RED LILY

This cute little oil painting started as a demo at the Sebastian River Art Club in September.  Several of my students started it.  I just love the color red, Cadmium and Alizarin just get my attention!  I finished this up for a show in Melbourne, "Frits & Friends" on October 16th, and it never dried in time in spite of having a fan on it for 5 days.  Same thing with the below.

HUMMINGBIRD

"Hummingbird" oil, 20" x 16"
This painting has been morphed 4 times.  It started as another painting beneath, which I painted over, to be a blue vase setting on a red drape with gold ribbon.  Acrylic.  Awful.  I never even showed it.  After having it for a few years I finally painted it over last year with oils, same blue vase, but with apples.  Still didn't sell, so I painted a hummingbird on it and waited for it to dry for the Melbourne show.  Didn't.  I touched it so much that the colors are a bit more muted than they were.  Well, now it's dry and ready to be shown.

Well, that's all for today, and next posting will be my agenda--of course I have over-committed myself as usual and my head is spinning, but glad to get my art out to be seen, and, hopefully purchased!

Two New Portraits

And Four Months Later . . .

It's been about 4 months since my last posting--lazy summer--so I will just jump in now and post a couple of pieces I did within the last week or so, and later dig out the paintings I've done since March and post them here.

This first one is a portrait of Anthony Smith, who modeled for us at the Saturday portrait drawing sessions at the Sebastian River Art Club.  Melbourne artist Brett Pigon helped some of the artists with their portraiture which was mostly in charcoal or pencil.  Mine was in pastel pencils, a very portable and somewhat forgiving medium, which colors blend beautifully together or separately.  He needs a bit more tweaking on the hair, more color on the face, and he will eventually be dressed in ethnic costume.

Anthony Smith, pastel by Judy Burgarella
Below is a lovely painting rendered in oil, the composition of which is thought by the experts to be of a work by Leonardo DaVinci.  One can learn a lot by copying the masters, and I take no credit for the composition, which I believe is half of the intrinsic value of a painting.  An artist can be a wonderful painter, but rank poor on composition.  So not only can one learn a lot about painting techniques in the copying process, but you can't help but learn a lot about composition also.  In this painting I also learned a lot about value placement and their important role in a painting.  I had a fabulous time with this one, and couldn't wait to demo another for my students, and teach them some of the tricks I learned along the way.

More to post from my 4-month absence, when time permits.

March--Last Burst of Art Shows!

AND A HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S DAY TO YOU ALL!

UNDER THE OAKS
Fine Art & Craft Show
Sponsored by the Vero Beach Art club
March 12-13-14, 2015

What a show!  Supposedly, over 80,000 people attend in a wonderful oak tree-filled setting in Vero Beach.  About 230 exhibitors, some of the best in the country.  It's exhausting but fun.  I was satisfied with sales and made many contacts, chatted with old and new friends, networked, and talked up my art.  Unfortunately, I became allergic to the oak trees--I made the mistake of raking all the oak leaves, exposing mold and dirt and just creating a lot of dust in the process, so I could place my pretty rug  there.  So for 3 days itchy skin plagued me.  It is so inspiring to see such great work.

We had some "spitting" rain a few times, but all-in-all the weather held up.

PLEIN AIR AT THE VERO BEACH YACHT CLUB
Paint-out, Show & Sale
March 25, 8:00 am - 8:00 pm
"At Rest" Acrylic by Judy Burgarella

Had a great day painting outdoors with friends at the Yacht Club.  The show and sale later in the day was a good one, with half the paintings being sold, and this little gem of mine (12x16) sold for $350.  Paintings had to be framed and wired, ready for hanging, so I had brought several frames with me to fit the best one to the painting.  It is such a pleasure not having to worry about a wet painting, thanks to the quick drying properties of Acrylic paints.

In order to get a view that inspired me, I had to go way out to the end of a dock and set up.  Very awkward, and not much room else I may end up in the drink.

Happily, an hour or so into my painting Carol Bennet set up next to me and we chatted for some time about what artists usually talk about--art and artists!  She did a very large abstract/impressionist type of painting, very effortlessly while I struggled with my little one.  But we both had such fun.

The day was cool, and very breezy, and so I fought the wind while my hair blew in my watery eyes all day.  Such is the plein air expience.  At least I had no bugs dried into the pigment like I usually do when painting in a meadow or at the beach.

INTERNET FIND!
A couple of days later I was on the internet looking at portraiture and was steered to an Ebay seller with this gem of a painting for sale for a starting bid of $50.  I bid $55 and got it!  When it arrived, it definitely was an original oil painting, of great quality but quite old and with hairline crackles.

My guess is German, 18th Century.  Glued onto board.  Several small repairs that look like they'd been done a long time ago.  Signature is pretty obliterated but an expert would be able to tell.  I was thrilled. To be able to closely examine the colors and brushstrokes, it is an excellently rendered oil painting which I will treasure and learn from.  I have not taken it apart yet, I want to set aside a block of time to devote to that careful process.  Perhaps there will be a surprise under that beautiful gilded, slightly damaged, ornate wooden frame.  Sometimes you just get lucky.  But I got lucky again . . .

ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY FIND!
A few days later I found this little gem in a thrift shop:
"Sarah Louise Bowes" by Kenneth R. Ransley
While rummaging through a collection of pictures leaning against a chair in a thrift shop this one caught my eye.  I tried to resist but found myself going back to it 3 times.  The last thing I needed was another picture.  But I finally picked it up and examined it closely.  Image size was about 9" by 12", and it was beautifully and very professionally rendered.  Obviously appreciated by some recent owner as it was professionally framed with museum glass and double matted with no foxing.  The frame was plain, but appropriate for a fine piece.  The original typewritten information was taped to the back of a neatly paper-backed application, which read, "Sarah Louise Bowes Circa 1927-28 Artist: Kenneth B. Ransley."  Framer was "Frame Center and Gallery, Custom Framed, Sarasota Florida."  The artist, according to the internet, is from Chicago, and Kenneth is actually a woman's name (b March 21, 1893 - d June 12, 1989)  Her career spanned many years, as did her husband Frank T. Ransley whom she met while studying at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.  I found postings of several people who had purchased her work at garage sales or thrift shops, she must have been very prolific.  A shame the subjects themselves were of such little value to their families that they ended up in the throes of a second-hand sale.  Working with my daughter Robin at her and Cass's Crimson Key Estate Sales company, we see a lot of this, and it is always sad to see.

The strokes creating the face are so simple, with not much shading, and it is spectacular how this artist captured the essence of Sarah with such little effort.  The hair strokes are presented so matter-of-factly, with only a few random strands drawn in just the right place.  Perfect!  There is nothing like a perfectly rendered painting or drawing, and this is one ... and I own it!  The price?  Well, there was a big fat price tag of $10 on it, but for that day only all framed pictures were half price.  So for $5, less than the cost of a lunch, I bought a treasure.  What luck!  Unfortunately, this will keep me on the lookout for more paintings to hoard.  Actually my art "finds" look quite nice collectively sitting on easels on top of the decorative shelf space that lines our kitchen and family room. Just have to get rid of some pottery and baskets up there.  So there is room for more, much to husband Bob's chagrin.

 PORTRAITS IN ACRYLIC
My first class at the
Vero Beach Museum of Art
"Crow Indian" Acrylic by Judy Burgarella

Although I have assisted Christine Thomas for many months now with her "Cork & Canvas" painting parties at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, this Monday was my own first class there.  I have been teaching painting and drawing for 15 years, and looked forward to this one at the Museum.  The class was packed with 15 students of various levels of expertise, from beginner to intermediate.  So I lectured a bit on brushes, paints, techniques, and the joy of painting portraits, had them prime the canvas in between talks, then jump right in to paint the values of the face.  Class was 1:30-4:30, and by 4:30 all paintings--including mine--were still at the "ugly" stage.  Next week we will make them beautiful and dramatic.  Some may want to segue right into painting their own subjects, which is fine with me.  Such fun to share my excitement over portraiture!  I get in the zone as soon as I put the brush to canvas.  My drug of choice.

OPEN CLASS AT
THE SEBASTIAN RIVER ART CLUB
1st & 3rd Thursdays, 9:00-12:00
Well, tomorrow, April 2nd, will be my class at the Sebastian Club.  Continuing my oil Indian, similar to the acrylic one above, as a half-hour demo.  People paint what they want, from pets to landscaping to portraits.  It's very loose and free-wheeling, almost any medium but mostly oil and acrylic.

After that I pick up my little granddaughter Salem and we'll go out to lunch, then we'll paint eggs with neon paint and hang them on the Jacaranda tree.  Have to squeeze as much time in with her while she still thinks I'm super gramma.

I'll post some of the egg creations for all to see next time.  Hope you enjoyed this posting.  And God bless you at Eastertime.

February was Art-Filled and Fun!

Special note:  If you have visited my website www.burgarellaart.com please forgive the outdated information, as I am in the process of creating a whole new website which will be launched soon.  Stay tuned!

A few delicious morsels since my last posting . . .

Well, Art on the Island (Feb 13-14) was a smashing success.  The Clubhouse on Marsh Island was packed with buyers and lookie-loo's, and just gobs of people who love art.  The food was great, and there was specialty beers and wine flowing, and everyone seemed to be having a jolly-good time.  But most importantly, my "Artbox" won first place prize in it's category (Paintings with Pizazz!)  AND it sold!  Would have liked it for myself, but you have to let your babies go!

"Mona Lisa Artbox" Oil painting on Art Box by Judy burgarella
Then a concert at my friend Geoff's, featuring "Fishing in America" which was fabulous.  Good music, good food, and fun with friends.

Did a couple of demos at the Sebastian River Art Club during my classes this month, one in oils and one in acrylics, and did a demo in acrylics for my upcoming acrylic class in the Vero Beach Museum of Art.  Tried to work out the kinks in demoing the following, but couldn't make it work, so did a demo on a close-up of my granddaughter, Salem, which I will post when it's done--in the ugly stage right now.  But people enjoyed watching the process at the Museum.  The other painting is shown below, and is my 3-1/2-year-old granddaughter Salem who wants to be an "As-s-t" just like her grandma.

"Salem the Artist" Acrylic by Judy Burgarella
A little more tweaking on her face and it will be done--but it will have to wait until after "Under the Oaks," coming up this weekend.  Still so much to do, but I'm getting it done.  Tweaked some old paintings, adding birds and such to get them moving, touched up some frames, having prints made, and I have a few new paintings to show off.

After Under the Oaks, on Wednesday, March 25th is "Plein Air at the Vero Beach Yacht Club.  Fun painting outdoors all day with friends, culminating in an art show where the buyers are serious fans of marine art.  Rain date March 26th.  Looking forward to that, as I cut my art-teeth on plein air painting back in the day in Connecticut.

In between all this I managed to pitch in with a "Move-'Em-West," a big rally at the VB Admin complex near the airport.  When they say "You can't stop a train," that's not true, because we're going to do it.  We, a group of concerned citizens, will not let All Aboard Florida trains ruin our little piece of paradise by cutting through our beautiful shoreline towns with their dirty and dangerous freight trains, high-speed passenger trains flying over our roads, and all of this endangering our peaceful towns.  Enough said.  Back to art.

Then comes my upcoming "Painting Portraits in Acrylic" class at the Museum, and after that I can rest ... I think.  But actually I'll probably get geared up to work for my daughter at her Crimson Key Estate Sale business.  No rest for the weary.  Plus there's babysitting for adorable Salem.  Sandwiched in there somewhere I will paint something that inspires me, I just can't help it.  It's my drug of choice.

Come back again y'all!

Art Tour Over--now for AOTI!

SEBASTIAN ART STUDIO TOUR OVER ...
Wow, what a day!  The weather was fabulous, and had hundreds of visitors.  Sales were great, made a lot of contacts for future sales and classes, and met some very interesting people who love the arts.  Got great feedback on the public's visit to other studios ... everyone loved it.

I set up the house with 6 racks of art on the lanai, art throughout the dining and living rooms, with my portrait teaching video on the TV and U-Tube 2-minute portrait video on the computer.  Dozens of paintings were hung on the hallway wall going into my studio, with many small ones hung around the studio.  Had the Mona Lisa paintbox (pictured further down in this posting) in-process on the easel.  At these type of events I usually have a free raffle, and the raffle winners were picked by my granddaughter Salem (3 yrs): for a free 3-hour painting lesson in the media of your choice was Pat Levesque; free palette painting, subject of your choice was Pam Cusanelli; free plein air painting session (outdoors) was Dean Wyesinski.  All materials will be provided by me.

Lots of food, wine and other beverages on the counter.  But forgot to take pictures, it was so busy and I was so distracted.  Friends Rita Ziegler and Christine Thomas, along with my husband Bob, helped greet and guide.  All-in-all, it was a fun and successful day, and I plan to participate next year, God willing.

ART ON THE ISLAND
This should be a fun one.  The Vero Beach Art Club's very first 3D show, "Art On The Island," is scheduled for Friday 5-8-opening reception, then Saturday 10-4.   All three-dimensional art: jewelry, pottery, sculpture, wood-carvings, and paintings only allowed that consist of 3-dimensional items.  And so I thought it would be wonderful to use a paintbox of my dear friend and student, Ruth Steere, who passed away last year, and personally honor her memory in this way.  She would have loved it.  This is the second of her paintboxes that I have painted, the first one was a rooster, pictured in an earlier posting, which was donated as a fundraiser for the Sebastian River Art Club's Rosalee Hume Scholarship Fund.  Below is a pic of it, which is as I type under the high winds of a fan for the final drying, as it is in oil.  Only one little section is still wet, but will be ok by receiving which is over at 2:00.  Talk about squeaking in!

"Mona Lisa Paintbox" Oil by Judy Burgarella

Had such fun painting this one.  And talk about gaining a close and personal appreciation for a master's painting!  The hand by the way is Bob's, who reluctantly posed for about 20 pictures, and put up with me bending his fingers and arm in all kinds of angles.  It's such a different kind of work to show, I wonder how it will be received?  I painted another master's painting a few years ago for a special Sebastian River Art Club Show, pictured below.  Note the remote in her hand and the Superbowl on the TV.  "Whistler's Mother's Obsession."

"Whistler's Mother's Obsession" oil by Judy Burgarella

And so I hope my paintbox meets with approval by art-lovers.  In any case, I believe this show is a great idea for the Vero Beach  Art Club, and I hope that this becomes a yearly event.

The Sebastian Art & Music Festival
January 17th & 18th, Riverview Park, Sebastian, Florida,

As I type this, I am ready to crash.  Tent shows can be exciting, but exhausting.  And it's all about Sell-Sell-Sell.  That is basically what we're there for, so we all put our creative juices aside and put on our marketing hats to help pay for our addictive habit.

The weather was beautiful, and I was neighbored by a potter and jeweler.  Lots of friends and students came by my tent to chat, and I handed out lots of literature and business cards.  So it was a slow start on Saturday, but in the end I did ok ... not great, but ok.  Moved out some originals and prints, and promoted some upcoming shows: "Art By The Sea," the Vero Beach Art Club's premier show in the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Friday-Saturday-Sunday of next weekend.  I'll be doing Quality Control for incoming art, and helping Dawn Mill as part of the hanging crew inbetween.  Below is a picture of my own entry into that show.  It is painted in acrylic, and is from a photo I took during a visit to the Brevard Zoo--a fabulous place to find painting subjects.

"Flamingo" acrylic by Judy Burgarella

Art By The Sea is a fun show and a wonderful venue for VBAC artists, being that it is in this wonderful museum in Vero Beach.  I will be teaching a 5-week course on portrait painting in acrylics there this spring, and I am currently assisting Christine Thomas with her "Cork and Canvas" classes there, which are a smashing success on about every other Thursday night.

After Art By The Sea next weekend, I will be getting ready for the 4th Annual Sebastian Art Studio Tour, which will be February 7th, 10-5:00, and includes 13 artists in 11 studio stops, including mine.

After that is "Art on the Island," another VBAC-sponsored show featuring 3-dimensional art.  I've got a doozie in the works for that one, which I will post soon--but right now it's in the ugly stage.

And following that in March will be the BIGGIE ... the Vero Beach Art Club's "Under the Oaks," one of the biggest shows in the state, drawing upwards of 80,000 visitors.  Need to paint some special things for that ... but when time?  Life is rich with exciting ideas, interesting people, fun art events and beauty all around when one is involved in the arts.  It is my drug of choice, my therapy, my food for life ... though only second to my grandchild Salem.

And so it goes, after Under the Oaks my art-life will slow down and bit, just in time for the blast of hot weather here in Florida, but along with the hot weather comes all of those beautiful tropical birds who migrate up in the spring to new feeding grounds.  It's a veritable zoo here in Florida, compared to where we came from--Connecticut. And also I will spend more time with Salem and her family.  And have more time to get all those painting ideas out of my head and onto the canvas.

Stay tuned for news of the expanding arts district in Vero Beach off 14th, as I hear more about it.
